RC Diocese of Aberdeen
Registered Scottish Charity No. 00512
Will you be there?
Young people from all around the world will be converging on the capital of Spain for World Youth Day 2011. At the last WYD 2008 in Sydney, the Holy Father, Pope Benedict, hoped that he would greet another large gathering of Catholic young people in Madrid. Planning is well under way. The Diocese of Aberdeen has booked forty places. We are pledged to take forty pilgrims to Madrid. If the demand is great we will book more places. Please book early!
Who is going?
The preferred age range is from 18 years to 35 years. But, surprise, surprise some oldies are going. The are young in heart and involved with young people as pastors and leaders. Those who are 16 years to 17 years may apply. If there are sufficient numbers and the ratio of leaders to pilgrims is appropriate then we may take some of these mid-teenagers. If you are interested, then apply.
When?
Sun 14 August 2011(depart by air from Edinburgh) until Tuesday 23 August (arrive by air at Edinburgh).
Where do we stay?
Alcala Residence Hall, Alcala de Henares, University of Madrid
What does it cost?
The planning figure is approximately £787 for flights, accommodation (bed and breakfast), and registration. The total cost should not exceed £847 per person – but see below.
Do I need to pay it all at once?
No! We are looking for a deposit of £70 from every Pilgrim to be paid before 31 July 2010. Thereafter we will have a series of dates for further payments.
Do we get any financial help?
Deaneries, parishes and every individual is expected to work in a co-operative spirit raising funds to support the pilgrims.
Concerts, ceilidhs, sales of work, sponsored walks, car-washing, gardening and other appropriate means of raising funds will help to pay for those who have difficulty in making payments. There may be small, discretionary grants from the Diocese to meet particular cases.
What about other meals?
The registration fee covers small meals during the WYD programme. However it is probably prudent to allow an additional £100 for food, and other travel and contingencies?
What skills do I need?
Your enthusiasm, your gifts of grace and Faith and a determination to participate in the programme, The theme is “Planted and Built up in Jesus Christ Firm in Faith”. There will be catechesis, teaching, faith sharing and many wonderfully inspiring opportunities to meet other young Catholics. Reflection, pilgrimage hospitality and the confidence building awareness of so many other young Catholics helps us all to find space to pray and to grow.
How do I share in The Sacramental Life?
There will be several large Masses, and some small more intimate and homely celebrations of the Eucharist with a few other pilgrim groups. The variety is truly impressive.
Will there be a chance to use the Sacrament of Reconciliation?
Confessions are always available in several locations. Many take time to reflect, and to make a thoroughly prepared confession.
