St Mary’s is a much loved gem of a Church. Sitting serenly beside the River Ness it is a welcome haven for many visitors who come to the city every year. It is a most familiar and comfortable home to the hundreds of parishioners from Inverness and the surrounding area.
There are problems which the People of St Mary’s face in continuing to provide a warm place of welcome, in which the beauty and dignity of the Mass proclaims the Way, the Truth and the Life which is Christ. The problems are manifold, but most of them can be traced to the simple fact that the old lady, our lovely building is showing the signs of wear and tear. In 2012 we are celebrating our 175th anniversary.
We have structiral problems which if not dealt with immediately could lead to more severe damage, and heavier costs of repair.
Due to the generosity of former, and present, members of St Mary’s, there is capital invested in the Diocesan Endowment Fund for the benefit of St Mary’s. After discussion in the Parish Finance/Fabric Committee it has been decided to draw down some of this capital to pay for the immediate and necessary repairs.
It is not prudent to draw on capital without making some effort to build it up again, especially as the twice yearly dividend has been an integral part of the Parish general income.
Our Fabric and Finance Committee is aware that you also face rising costs in utilities, heating, electricity, water, telecommunications and prices in general. Nevertheless we think that we should ask everyone in the Parish to help meet our repair costs.
Some people will be able to give more than others but we need to ask everyone to give what they can.
